Battle οf Leyte Gulf Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Battle ÃŽ ¿f Leyte Gulf - Essay Example The Japanese lost four carriers, three battle ships, six cruisers, together with up to 10000 sailors and number f trained pilots19. The main objective to capture this island was to have an advanced base for the final assault on southern Japan. The American Army and Marines landed at Okinawa on April 1, 1945. The Japanese opened a furious aerial counterattack, which included more than 350 Kamikaze attacks against U.S. ships and ground forces. Consequently, on April 8, 1945 the Allied Air Force began a campaign to destroy the Kamikaze bases in Japan. (Westphal Jr 267-268) However, the enemy attack continued in its intensity and by June 22, about 1,900 suicide planes had struck against Allied forces at Okinawa, sinking 25 ships. All the Kamikaze attack caused extraordinary Allied casualties. The Japanese did not have enough resources left for suicidal attack at the Okinawa bridgehead. The Japanese lost 7800 ac against 763 f allies in Leyte operation20. The good coordination f the joint forces as well as the combined forces was very critical to the allied victory. This could be possible because f the good command and control structure under the able leadership f Gen Macarthur. (Coles 576-577) The Strategic air offensive against Japan by B-29 had been going on for months. The Boeing B-29 Superfortress had been introduced into service in 1944. A successor f B-17, it had a much greater range and payload and a pressurized cabin that allowed it to fly over 30,000 feet. It was heavily armed with remote controlled gun. The new Twentieth Bomber Command was shifted from China and based in the Marianas. Attacks on Japan began on June 14, 194521. Initially the B-29s used to attack the Japanese cities by dropping incendiary bombs. After four month f saturation bombing, Japan had hardly any target left to attack except Hiroshima and Nagasaki22. The U.S political leaders wanted Japan's unconditional surrender. But Japanese had been asking for preservation f monarchy. On 26 July 1945, the western powers issued a final warning and surrender demand to Japan. U.S leadership agreed that if the Japanese refused to accept the unconditional surrender the Atomic Bomb must be used. The Atom Bomb Attack. On 25 July 1945, the Strategic Air Command in the Pacific was ordered to launch the atomic attacks any time after 3rd August. One f the scientists f nuclear weapon test committee, Stimson opined that, the atom bomb should be used in a surprise attack on an important war installation surrounded by housing. A specially trained B-29 group, with planes modified to carry the atom bomb, was based on Tinian. On the morning f August 6, a B-29 dropped a uranium bomb on Hiroshima with a power equivalent to 14,000 tons f TNT. On 09 July 1945, another B-29, being unable to hit Kokura, its primary target, dropped a plutonium bomb on Nagasaki. The Americans would have had a third atomic attack by August 15, but on August 10, President Truman ruled that no more bombs be used until further notice. On August 15, Japan announced its surrender. But final

Promoting Global Tolerance through the Film Industry Essay

Promoting Global Tolerance through the Film Industry - Essay Example But in much the same way, the media, of which film and television production is part could be used to propagate a lot of good acts and correct several wrongs (Hirschfeld, 2006, 69). It is in light of this that this present research work in the film and television industry is being conducted to identify ways by which movies could be used to foster global tolerance. By global tolerance, reference is being made to ethnic, religious, racial and cultural tolerance. In the current industry research therefore, I shall interview key players in the movies industry to seek from them ways by which movies can play the role of uniting the world and promoting global tolerance. Again, views shall be sought from the interviewees on whether or not it is necessary to have a regulatory body that should censor movies to ensure that their themes are directed towards the promotion of global tolerance. Furthermore, the efforts that have been put in place by movie makers so far shall be analysed. Sample I s elected one movie director, who is also a renowned scriptwriter and a film critic, who also doubled as a renowned film producer. The movie director and writer is Lenny Harvey, who works for Ultimate Paradise Movie Productions whiles the critic and producer is Frank Adams, who works for Graphic Motion Studio. I estimated that Harvey and Adams were people who knew all about movie production from its pre-production stage to the production stage and then the post production stage. To this effect, they were in an excellent position to provide useful data that were based on facts to the various questions that I had for them. The two interviewees were selected from two different movie production houses, which were Ultimate Paradise Movie Production in Texas and Graphic Motion Studio in Los Angeles. This was done to ensure fairness in the data collection procedure. Again, while answering questions from the interview, the interviewees were made to make references to only films and movies tha t had been done by other people and not to use their own works as reference points. This was also done to ensure a very high level of fairness and elimination of biases in the responds received from them. Data Collection Procedure As indicated earlier, I made use of interview as a data collection instrument for the research. The interview was considered very appropriate because the general approach to the research was a qualitative approach instead of a quantitative approach. Because this was a qualitative research, I wanted the data collection procedure to be based on ethical sentiments and awareness creation instead of statistical fact finding. This means that the use of interview was to afford I to ask a lot of leading questions that would set the tone of the research for a brainstorming exercise, aimed at finding an intervention to solve an existing problem. The interview conducted was a face to face interview that involved me, visiting the interviewees on a set date. This was do ne after permission was sought from the interviewees to seek their consent for the interview through a formal letter. An average of one hour was spent with each interviewee where I asked the interviewees various questions that bordered on how the movie industry can be used to sensitize the whole world on the need to ensure global tolerance in terms of cultural, ethical, racial and religious awareness and acceptance. Before the actual

Can Advertising Influence Our Life We Live Media Essay

Can Advertising Influence Our Life We Live Media Essay These days every one sees advertising in their life, however this person has not watched TV or listened to the radio. Normally,an average person who watches television 1 to 4 hours a daye. During these hours of watching Tv,there is a big profiibility, because it has an impact on peoples choices by showin them the new and available product that this person watches advertisement. It is powerful on attracting consumers psychologically, visually and also culturally. but the problem is that can these attractive advertising affect our life or not? The propose of this conceptual paper is to understand the influence of advertising on our life. In this paper I satudy forth part which is important in our llife such as culture, health and economy. Key words: advertising, effect on people life 1.Introduction These days advertising is Wherever you live in the world, whether it is Europe, America or Australia ,even you live in rural city you will see advertising. You can see advertising in several ways such as: newspaper , radio ,TV and billboard which puts up along the roadside,so it is ubiquitous and virtually unavoidable for the average consumer. In begin it si better to know what advertisment means:Advertising is a communication tool which by the marketers to inducing the potential buyers to purchase certain product or service. It plays a pivotal role in achieving the financial and commercial objectives of the companies concerned. The role of advertising is also vital in the cutthroat competitive environment . advertising shows to their demand a bit more of the marketers towards informing, educating and facilitating the customer as to how to have a timely access to certain product or a service in a novel and innovative way. The marketers are therefore devising ways to make advertising more effective.General Attitude of College Students Towards Consequences and Impact of Television Advertising in Pakistan 592 Despite the fact that advertising is an effective tool for the business along with its being an important element of the modern age and a fast growing industry, the public image of advertising is still a matter of great concern. (ODonohoe,1995). Advertising is criticized for its presenting misleading information, promoting adverse values, fake claims, subliminal seduction messages and persuading people to buy things they no longer need (Katona, 1964; Pollay, 1986; Pollay and Mittal,1993). Again, this industry is blamed of spreading unsustainable consumption patterns around the world over and encouraging excessive consumption. All the foregoing aspects are apt to hinder its effectiveness as well as efficiency as a marketing tool (Beales et al., 1981; Calfee and Ringold, 1987; Pollay and Mittal, 1993; Wright, 1986). Therefore, it is critical of the advertising concerns to follow the public opinion advertising for its for reaching impact on the economy, cultural values and our health. (Wills and Ryans; 1982.) 2)Effect of advertising on culture Culture is one of the significant aspects which is changed by seeing advertisement. Be for being of this part, it is essential to know what culture means that the way of life which includes beliefs, aesthetics and institutions of a civilization. This definition shows that culture is more effected by advertising, because images used in advertising are often idealized, they eventually set the standard which we in turn feel we must live up to. firstable, The essential goal of advertising is to convince the consumer that he or she would have a better life if he/she used this advertised product. Of course they also tell us the only way we can reach the level of beauty, intelligence, or some other value is through the use of their product. For example, with the Give your hair a Boost! ad, it is obviously counting on the woman with gorgeous hair who fills up the entire ad and is used to make you wonder if your hair is good enough. (Fruit Kicks) The text in the ad is minimal and that which is there is very weak in arguing for this products superiority. The advertisers main hope is when you go to buy personal hygiene products, you will remember the beauty of the woman and the healthiness of her hair. (Fruit Kicks) They are confident their target audience will transfer feelings they get from this womans appearance toward the product and will end up purchasing it. Secondly, advertisment affect on people daily progromm.for instance; if there is a sport that is getting a lot of attention by the media and gains popularity among your friends and society, you will more likely want to practice the sport and be cool with all your friends,so you will have fun with your friends and be more healthy because of the exercise you are doing. Also, our spoken language is impacted by seeing advertising.for example, the language used in an advertisement, many times, is influenced by the new generations with new words that may have not existed ten years before. This example is a proof of the development of culture as well. Indian example which shows us how advertising changing their Indian life. As village politician Chandraprakash Dwivedi said Now village girls want to dress like Rani Mukherjee in Bunty aur Babli this within four weeks of the release of the film. Men want a hairstyle like Radhe Bhayya in hit movie Tere Naam. Bindis. Many other aspects of culture have been sacrificed in favour of western influences. Folk music and travelling singers have given way to cassettes and compact discs. Although information and communication links that television, cinema, radio and newspapers have brought about are a lot; it is undeniable that they have had a very strong impact on the masses who watch them. Culture and social structures have suffered, as have traditional art forms and methods of communication. 3) Effect of advertising on our economy Advertising plays a critical role in a market economy. As Dr. Kenneth Arrow and the late Dr. George Stigler, said: Advertising is a powerful tool of competition. It provides valuable information about products and services in an efficient and cost-effective manner. In this way, advertising helps the economy to function smoothly-it facilitates the entry of new products and new firms into the market. 3.1-First, according to Georges quote, Advertising plays a significant role in the business cycle In a country in which consumer spending determines the future of the economy. Advertising motivates people to spend more by conveying useful information, which tells them about product and service choices, and accelerate the regular acceptance of new products and to lift the level of acceptability of established products, so Consumers who view the advertisement update their information and consumption decisions and may purchase the product. In fact demand for product, which advertisement showed, goes up so company s profit increase. Also this event cause on companys security, it means by increasing its profit, its finance is more stable, so company feel more safety. Finally, company decide to increase the number of its product or it wants to make a new product. for each of them it needs new employee. Thus, advertising makes a job or it increase employment in our society. For example U.S. advertising accounts for about 2.5 percent of the countrys $14 trillion gross national product. American consumers rely heavily on advertising to influence how they spend some $9 trillion annually on various goods and services. A 1999 study by one of the countrys premier econometric modeling firms, the WEFA Group, and Nobel Laureate in economics Dr. Lawrence R. Klein further underscored this economic impact. The study found that advertising played a key role in generating 18.2 million of the 126.7 million jobs in the United States in that year. 3.2-secondly,advertising reduce selling cost. Companies believe that advertising is one of the best way which can introduce their new product to their costumer even other people which do not have any information about their product. They know that it is impossible to introduce their product to each person face to face. It takes a lot of time. In fact their money and their time is wasted by doing this work. At least this event increase their product selling cost, so advertising helping them by showing their product to other people and reduce selling cost. 3) Effect of advertising on our healthy Effect of advertising on health Most people have learned what they know about health from personal experience, from friend and relative, form government , from the family doctor and ,,,,. Advertising is one of the way which is learned people about their health by showing the good point of their product ,which is goof for their health. In fact , these advertising influence people by making good impression that can persuade them. Some of these products advertising are not really good for the health. 1)For example tobacoo advertising. These companies use term such as light to misunderstand smoker by believing that brand is safer and reduce health risks more than others, so thy will continue to support these company by buying cigarette. 2)another example of which is make mislead smoker is that sometimes cigarette ads are placed next to wight loos ads in magazines. Many young girls suffer from weight issue, so when they see cigarette ads and weight they decide to use it more than before. In other hand, some of unhealthy products depict peoples imagine. For example: 1) Tobacco companies show smoking look glamorous and cool, so teens are so concerned with their image and want to look like the models that are in the advertisements, they will start smoking cigarettes. 2) Beer advertising shows that if you drink this brand of beer you may catch your dreamy girl. It is one of wishes that young boys have, so they lead to drink more this brand of beer. these daye Beer is the beverage of choice for many youth, and between 1998 and 2002, industry spending on televised beer ads increased 45 percent to $972 million. Figure2 competes beer with other alcohol drink .: According to this figure ,we understand how much beer advertising is successful than other alcohols drink such sprit and wine .it has more fanner because of its advertising

The Impact of Ethics on Decision Making Essay -- Ethics Morals Decisio

The Impact of Ethics on Decision Making   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ferrel and Gardiner (1991) say there are two criteria to ethical choices on top of being legal. The first being; â€Å"One does not infringe on the basic inalienable human rights – such as life, freedom of speech and privacy, due process – recognized by our society (ethical formalism).† Basically stating the respect of others should be considered in all decisions. The second states each person should strive towards an increase in self-esteem and mental health. Maintaining self-respect should be thought of in the decision making process.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  We all face decisions in every day life, some appear obvious and easy while others do not. People are always struggling with their ethics during the decision making process. There are those who do not how to decided which is ethical or not. I found an â€Å"Ethics Quick Test† from the Online Ethics for Engineering and Science page (2002), which provides seven things, to check in order to examine the ethical implications toward a person decisions: 1)  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Is the action legal? 2)  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Does it comply with your understanding of our values? 3)  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  If you do it, will you feel bad? 4)  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  How will it look in the newspaper? 5)  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  If you know it is wrong, do not do it. 6)  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  If you are not sure, ask. 7)  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Keep asking until you get an answer. Even though this information pertains to a specific topic it can also be used in everyday life. Everyone should be able to look at a c...

What is the main communication strength of maintaining large scale of customs? 3. How GP keep up Communication process? 1. 5 Limitation of the study In doing this study we have to face some limitations, those are Employers were not interested to talk. Employees reluctant to share internal matter. For understandability we had to use very simple statistical tools. We were not able to collect enough information from government research agen cy. 2. Findings and Analysis 2. 1 Communication method with customers: After fourteen years of operation, Grameen Phone has about 30 million subscribers as of may 2008. To retain the current subscriber and to increase the number of them, Grameen Phone has to communicate its customer continuously. As a result it comes to know about customers problems, expectations and demand from the company. To do so, Grameen Phone gets linked to its subscriber 24 hours throughout the year by providing information. Moreover, the company fascinates the customer by giving every type of facilities such as SIM replacement, change of address as so on in their customer care centre. To provide these services. The company communicates with its customers through direct or indirect method. These methods are described below. Products and service Direct Method Through this direct process, the effective communication of Grameen phone with its customer occurs in a two way, face to face situation where both verbal and non verbal symbols and languages are apparent to both parties, which can be called level 1 communication. Moreover the company deals with its subscribers by level 2 communication where a two ways, but now face verbal situation occurs. Both in these two types of communication, instant feedback are available. As a result, the company can gradually learn about what subscriber wants from the company and can fill its subscribers demands, expectations and solve problems as per as its ability. However, after learning about the expectation, demand and problem of subscriber, Grameen phone divide these things into three segments and these are Request # Complains # Queries After doing so, then Grameen phone inform their management by doing email in he internet. Actually, in the whole process of corresponding, Grameen phone prefers too email subscribers and management. There are some kinds of examples on direct method are shown below through which Grameen phone be connected with customers. $ *111*# all time get to any information $ 121 hot online service: $ Message service ; Email contacts $ Customer Management centre 121 HOTLINE SERVICE GrameenPhone Ltd. Email And Message Service On the other side, if any subscriber wants to inform about their problems, they can do it through email contact or message service also. As a result, they can be linked with GP very closely. Indirect Method On the other side, Grameen phone communicate with its subscribers through indirect method by level 3 communications where a two way, face verbal communication does not occur. Thus the company their facilities of SIM card to subscribers. Some kinds of indirect method are also given below: # Advertisement on television # Advertisement on bill board # Advertisement on newspaper. # Advertisement on internet. 2. 2 Communication Methods In The Organization: To achieve its operatin g goals, Grameen phone’s needs to direct and coordinate its interdependence of units and individuals toward a desired point. As a result, a formal organization structure results from efforts to achieve coordination. On the other side, coordination results from effective communication and well organized programs or systems. There is a formalized hierarchy of Grameen phone has been shown below. Here, organization chart defines the scope of the organization. The people generally occupy roles and perform functions in all those spaces in the organization chart, he pictured structure could seldom be considered a final answer. However, to conduct function, the officials of GP have o contact with each other.Generally, GP believes in informal communication when they usually talk to each other. But, to submit a proposal, report to their management, they prefer to email communication better. They do not submit these things by direct handing over. On the other side, their communication in mobile by colleague is free as they have their own company mobile SIM. 2. 3 Communication Flow In The GP The flows of communication within the organization may be upward, downward, or horizontally directed. Grameen Phone Limited has downward and upward communication flows which are following: Downward Communication:Downward Communication is that from superior to subscriber-from boss to employee, and from policy maker to operating personnel. Five elements of downward communication are following: Job instruction: Teaching new or current employees how to do a particular task. Rationale: The justification for the organization and its goals; how a particular function fits into the total organization. Information: Orientation to the company – its rules, practices, procedures, and history. Feedback about job performance: Supervisors evaluation or appraisal of employee performance.Ideology: The effort to convey to and install in employees a degree of enthusiasm, loyalty, or support for the organization. This flows, of course, related to the hierarchical structure of the organization. Upward communication: When management requests information from lower organizational levels, the resulting information becomes feedback to the request. This is called upward communication. This communication keeps management informed about the feelings of subordinates, helps management identity both difficult and potentially promotable employees, and paves the way for even more effective downward communication.Basically these two types of communication flow are used by the Grameen Phone. 2. 4 Communication System in GP Every organization has two types of communication system. Grameen Phone is not except from them. It has also two types of communication system which are following: External System: This system is typified by the formal organization chart. This system is used to control individual and group behavior and to achieve organizational goals. Some elements of external syste m are following: #Business letter #Report writing #Business proposal Memorandum report etc.Internal System: The internal system develops as people interact within the formal, external system and certain behavior patterns emerge, patterns which accommodate social and psychological needs. In internal system, both formal and informal elements of communication are used which are following: #Grapevine #Face to face communication #PABX #Mobile #Letter etc 2. 5 Communication With The Agents The products and services of Grameen Phone are sold through the following channels: Grameen Phone at present has 450 Point of sales all over Bangladesh in order to sell their mobile phones. These Point of Sales include # 11 Dealers and their franchises. # 78 Outlet Agents. # 52 Individual agents. Dumbo Case Analysis

Hw Assignment #3: Two Trees 1) Continue organic growth in Dumbo – Rent vs. Sell? Walenta should continue organic growth in Dumbo. I believe that he should rent the space that he has this way he continues to have a foot in the neighborhood as it expands. As we know living in Manhattan has become very expensive and people are going right over the bridge to re-establish themselves and their business. It would be critical for Walenta to stay in Dumbo and continue to have an effect in the expansion of the neighborhood homes/businesses. 2) Develop a new neighborhood.I believe there is much potential in Red Hook and Walenta should develop a new neighborhood there. It has the same industrial/neighborhood feel that Dumbo has. This neighborhood has the potential to become like Dumbo and possibly even greater. The neighborhood is slightly larger than Dumbo and he would be able to buy and expand more. 3) Become partner in tenant's businesses. As a fall back he should decide to partner up with a couple of tenant’s businesses. As we know, the real estate industry has gone through many ups and downs in the last few decades. It is important for him to have something else to fall back on. The only thing he would have to consider is that if he decides to enter into these businesses if real estate does go down the businesses might slow down as well. 4) Encourage establishment of new businesses in Dumbo. Establishment of new businesses should be encouraged in Dumbo. It is definitally an up and coming neighborhood. People who don’t want to spend the money in the city look to come over the bridge to spend a little less and still have the same quality and feel. Also as more people move in the more new businesses are needy. I believe that another big reason people are coming to Brooklyn because it allows them to live the city life but also have a community feel, something that is hard to come by in NYC. NYC is very overcrowded and many of the neighborhoods donâ€⠄¢t have a community feel because of this. Brooklyn has the space and ability to make the neighborhood feel like a community. Small businesses will attract these city goers looking for a homey feel with the quality of life like that in the city.
